As we live and experiment, just like growing up while forming self-identity, our cooking style gradually gravitates, returns, to the tastes we remember from our childhood. How our grandma pampered us after coming home from school with a bowl of sweet rice balls stuffed with minced pork, juicy with rich broth, and morning porridge with grandma’s treasured pickled vegetables. How our mother and aunts nurtured us with abundant plates of homemade assorted dumplings, egg custards, fried rice omelettes decorated with smiling faces in ketchup…etc. Dad would take us on food tour in summer time around the island, eating best ham-hock at streetside food stall, best noodle soup sitting on tiny stools in a cramped shop with a pot of stew that had been continuously cooking for years, best steamed beef thinly sliced and simply seasoned, best chicken wings that left sticky sauce all over our faces, fingers, and clothes.
“Thousand Golds” represents respectful terms of endearment to address precious daughters.
“Oranges” evocates my childhood memories around Taiwan, how we used to call candy stores “Orange Store” filled with jars and jars of colorful sweetness that we children can easily hop in with a coin, well earned for good behaviors, to buy one piece of candy or gum.
This website, is to show my gratitude and to honor all the loved ones in our family who made memories that continues to be a blessing and guide to fulfilling their expectations.
